strawberries at Felin Newydd HouseSummer time!

I do not think Wales has ever looked more beautiful than it has done this Spring and now we are loving the warmth of a proper Summer. The walled garden at Felin Newydd House is thriving and at least 25kg of delicious, sweet strawberries have already been picked. Our local Market in Hay-on-Wye has been overflowing with locally grown produce perfect for those gastronomes among you who like to give their fruit and veg a good squeeze and sniff before accepting it as worthy for your creations. Funnily enough the Kitchen at Felin Newydd is often used by professional chefs who love the way it is equipped and planned.
Our guests have enjoyed BBQ’s, Champagne and ice cream while playing a highly competitive bout of Croquet on the lawn. Cooling themselves down by paddling in the stream and evening walks to catch the sunsets. Fishing and swimming in the Wye or Usk have also proved a sensible way to enjoy time off in this spectacular part of Wales.

Comment from our last guests at Felin Newydd House:
“Back in the Black Mountains - favourite part of the world – All of us at home here – heat and flowers and children skipping across the lawn. Hay Bluff. Clifford church, birthday celebrations – feet dipping in the pond and the stream – climbing inside the Copper Beech – mornings of sunlight streaming through sash windows in bedrooms – wonderful! Truly magnificent stay in a very lovely house. Desperately sad to leave but our stay was memorable and the weather was perfect. For a large family celebration you can not do better.”
Vivien, Nick, Aiden, Nikki, Poppy, Bertie & Rosie

Comment from our last guest at Blaencwm:
“What a perfect way to spend a sunny weekend, idyllic setting, lovely wildlife, incredible views. Great walk up hay Bluff, excellent market in Hay on Wye (unusual jams), we recommend the Three Tuns in Hay for lunch.” Joe and Hannah

The Six Nations Rugby Union Tournament

Thinking Ahead: The Six Nations Rugby Union Tournament – Felin Newydd is only 50 miles from the Millenium Stadium, roughly an hour’s drive. Those who are not so keen on the game can remain at the house and be pampered by our friendly beautician and therapist. Call us for more information or ideas.

Weddings

Oh and Elizabeth and I are now Married! I think this is entitled to steal a little space in this Newsletter. A very winter wonderland wedding in Norway at -30C and a celebratory knees up at Felin Newydd 2 weeks later. Snow everywhere, cancelled flights, frozen airports, globally scattered wedding guests and still everything on both occasions, went off pretty much seamlessly – we even had sunshine in Wales! In truth the last six weeks have been so incredibly wonderful that I could probably lose control of this writing moment of mine. There, reined back in.

To all of you please have a wonderful March and we hope to see you at some stage soon in Wales.

The New Year - “Cool Country Hideaways” Grazia

crabapples in the garden of our exclusive hire propertyFelin Newydd reaches the dizzy heights of being chosen by Grazia Magazine as their principle property in their article about Cool Country House Hideaways.

Hay-on-Wye is not only about The Hay-on-Wye Literary Festival but is a fantastic part of the world to spend trawling through boutiques, thumbing antique books of every subject and sitting by log fires with a pint and a bowl of home-made cawl. The magic of winter can be truly enjoyed in the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons of Mid Wales.

A beautiful Country home for a Breconshire Christmas

breconshire-christmas1Shopping in Hay-on-Wye obviously a good selection of books new and old and also lovely boutiques: Bowie & Holbert, The Great English Outdoors, Chattels, F J Williams, the Thursday Market providing a great selection of local produce from foie gras and brioche to faggots and Swedes! Frosty walks in The Brecon Beacons or along the Gospel Pass, a spot of Pheasant Shooting or a good day out with The Golden valley Hunt – their Boxing Day Meet under the Clock Tower in the centre of Hay-on-Wye is a perfect example of this age old tradition. Our guests this year, however, confess to spending a lot of time sampling wine and smoked salmon in front of Felin Newydd’s open fires and not very much time exerting too much energy outside!

Accommodation for the Abergavenny Food Festival

“Abergavenny is to food what Cannes is to film, an annual festival for spotting rising stars in Britain’s artisan-food firmament”. So said Joanna Blythman in the March edition of Observer Food Monthly. The tenth Abergavenny Food Festival, which took place over the weekend 20 and 21 September, continued the trend by celebrating a decade of gastronomic delights and culinary innovation, informing, educating and entertaining thousands in its unique market town setting. The event always brings together people who care passionately about food to share their expertise, explore new enthusiasms, debate long into the night – and have enormous fun. Abergavenny is our nearest train station and is situated approx. 40 minutes by car from Felin Newydd House.

Accommodation for the Brecon Jazz Festival

The 25th Anniversary of the Brecon Intrernational Jazz Festival – this was our jazz baptism, having been born and bred in Breconshire but have never really dipped my toe into the wonderful world of jazz, there was no escape this time and thank the Lord! The Festival Organisers decided to put together a very special band to celebrate their 25th Anniversary and asked us to provide the board and lodging – Joe Temperley and his lovely wife Laurie, Scott Hamilton, John Pearce, Dave Green, Steve Brown, Martin Taylor, John Bunch, James Taylor and their highly organized organizer Brian Peerless. It was an absolute pleasure looking after them all and hope that we may do so again in the future.

Royal Welsh Show accommodationThis has to be seen to fully appreciate the extraordinary atmosphere at the stockman’s show as it is often known as opposed to The Royal Show being the Showman’s show. Duke of Edinburgh Charity Event at Felin Newydd House

duke-of-edinburgh2Our first Charity evening raising a considerable sum for the D of E in Wales without evening noticing! This was a wonderful evening and a credit to the young ladies and gentlemen from the Neath Unit who volunteered to be waiters and waitresses. Not one of them had previous silver service experience and not one of them made a mistake – it was a complete pleasure to give them their 15 minute lesson and watch them rise to the occasion. They were truly the most polite and helpful gang of youngsters. The dinner was a 4 course black tie evening for 50 guests, members of a local dining club. The guests were aware of the involved charity but were unaware that their waiters were actually all Gold Award Winners from The Neath & Port Talbot Branch of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme in Wales until we revealed all towards the end of the dinner. 2 of the team then gave a short resume of their experiences and Ian Gwilym Operations Manager for Wales Concluded the presentation. Elizabeth and I were amazed and the team’s behaviour, attitude, guitar playing and singing skills not to mention the fact that they were giving up a post Six Nations Rugby Saturday evening!
