Here are our top ten suggestions
1. Walk Walk Walk
The Brecon Beacons and The Black Mountains, along with the foothills, offer literally endless options; Pen-y-fan, Hay Bluff or Lord Hereford’s Knob for starters.
Ask us for routes!
2. Hay-on-Wye
Booktown, home of the Hay Festival and many, many wonderful shops and people.
Some must visits are, The Old Electric bazaar and café, Booths Bookshop (good luck leaving this one without a newly acquired library), The Globe venue and restaurant, Shepherd’s Ice Cream parlour absolutely delicious and probably as good for you as ice cream gets – find out why!
If you miss Thursday market day you will find most examples of local and not so local delicacies at the Hay Deli. Visit the book-stores, there are over 30. www.visithay.co.uk
3. Market day in Hay
Thursdays are the day to experience Hay in its full glory. Stock up on Kate the Bakers croissants – the best I have had anywhere, cheeses, locally produced charcuterie, veg, butchery, Alex Gooch’s sourdough and of course an abundance of highly unreliable gossip.
4. Wye not (ha!) explore the river by canoe
The best place to start is from Wye Valley Canoes in Glasbury.
Very friendly and very well organised – also an excellent café/restaurant for before and after grazing. 5 min drive . HR35NP.
5. Llangors Activity Centre
This multi-sport activity centre has a great indoor climbing area for both novice and experienced adventurers. You may like to arrange some gorge walking. 20 min drive. LD37UH.

6. Black Mountain Railway
Who doesn’t enjoy the sound and smells of a steam train – The Black Mountain Railway is great and definitely worth a look especially if you are wanting to explore the Welsh Valleys. 45 min drive. CF48 2DD.
7. The Four Waterfall walk
A circular walk through 'Waterfall Country' in the Brecon Beacons takes you past four stunning falls set in beautiful woodlands. 45 min drive. CF44 9JF
8. Dan yr Ogof show caves
These caves are amazing and, aside from the extraordinary formations, show evidence of human habitation for over 3000 years. www.showcaves.co.uk 50 min drive. SA9 1GJ. Tel: 01639 730284
9. Pony Riding
For exploration on horseback Paul and Emily Turner at Transwalestrails provide safe ponies and lots of experience. They are located in the heart of the Black Mountains and surrounded by a spidersweb of riding trails. www.transwales.com 25 min drive. LD30EG.
10. The Big Pit National Coal Museum
South Wales was arguably the epicentre of the Industrial Revolution producing the finest anthracite to be found anywhere. By 1913 Barry was the largest coal exporting port in the world.
Go 300 feet underground with a real miner and see what life was like for the thousands of men who worked at the coal face. https://museum.wales/bigpit/ 50 min drive from 3 Cocks NP49XP.
